Understanding CT Scan
A CT scan, or computed tomography, is a painless and non-invasive medical procedure used by physicians to diagnose and treat various medical conditions. It utilizes a specialized X-ray beam to generate detailed cross-sectional views of the targeted area, which can then be examined digitally or in print. CT scans are often the preferred method for diagnosing sources of pain and detecting various forms of cancer, offering superior clarity compared to conventional X-ray examinations.
Procedure Overview
- During the CT scan, you'll lie flat on a table that moves slowly through the machine while the scanning is conducted. You may be instructed to hold your breath briefly to ensure clear images. Typically, the entire procedure takes about 30 minutes.
Preparation for a CT Scan
- It's advisable to wear loose, comfortable clothing and remove any jewelry, eyeglasses, dentures, or hairpins that could interfere with the imaging process. Depending on your examination, you may need to fast for several hours beforehand, especially if contrast material will be administered. Inform your physician about any medications you're taking and disclose any allergies.
Common Uses of CT Scans
- Identifying abscesses in the abdomen
- Diagnosing appendicitis
- Assessing conditions like colitis, diverticulitis, and pancreatitis
- Detecting cancers affecting the colon, liver, pancreas, kidneys, and lymph nodes
- Staging cancer progression
